Inside QDock: What Happens When a Toolhead Is Parked

QDock is Quadro's parking system. When a toolhead isn't printing, it moves to a QDock station at one end of the X-axis, outside the build area, and its nozzle is sealed. That keeps idle nozzles from oozing or dripping onto the bed or the model while another color prints.

A four-toolhead printer has a simple problem: three heads are always idle. Where they wait, and what their nozzles do while they wait, decides how clean the print comes out.

Why Parking Matters

A hot nozzle that's left idle can leak a little melted plastic. On a printer with several toolheads, that has three consequences:

  • Drips on the bed or the model. Plastic from an idle nozzle lands where it shouldn't.
  • Color contamination. A trace of one color can end up in the next material when that head becomes active.
  • Lost build space. If idle heads wait over the plate, they take space from the build area.

QDock is designed to deal with all three.

What QDock Does, Step by Step

When a toolhead finishes its part of the print:

  1. Filament retracts slightly, which pulls the molten plastic back from the nozzle tip.
  2. The nozzle cools to standby temperature on its way to the station.
  3. The head moves to its QDock station, outside the build area.
  4. The nozzle tip is sealed automatically with a heat-resistant, nozzle-safe material.
  5. The head waits, sealed, until the print needs its color again.

While one head parks, the next one is already on its way. Because every toolhead has its own motor, the two movements overlap, with one leaving as the next arrives. The incoming head starts heating before it's needed, while the current head is still printing. You can read the full sequence in how Quadro makes tool changes faster.

Where the Stations Are

Quadro has two QDock stations, one at each end of the X-axis. Each station accommodates up to three toolheads. Because the stations sit outside the build area, the active head has the full 300 × 300 mm plate to work with. There are no dead zones in multicolor mode.

Parked and Sealed, Not Just Parked

Many multi-head designs park idle heads somewhere out of the way. Quadro goes a step further and seals the nozzle. A parked nozzle that is also sealed isn't free to leak, so nothing drips onto the bed, nothing oozes onto the model and no color bleeds into the next material.

How It Differs from a Tool Changer's Dock

In a tool changer, a dock is where a head is put down and picked up again. The head is a separate piece that couples and uncouples from the carriage on every change, and that coupling has to be realigned.

In Quadro, no head is ever picked up or put down. Every toolhead stays mounted on the machine and moves along the axis on its own. The QDock station is a parking and sealing place, not a handoff point. For how the designs compare, see IDEX vs IQEX and our multi toolhead 3D printer buying guide.

What It Means for Your Prints

  • Cleaner surfaces. No stray drips from idle nozzles.
  • Cleaner color transitions. Each nozzle only ever holds its own material.
  • Less waste. Idle nozzles aren't oozing filament, and colors don't share a nozzle, so there's no color-clearing purge. See Why Quadro Doesn't Purge.

Key Takeaways

  • QDock stations park idle toolheads outside the build area, at both ends of the X-axis.
  • Each nozzle is automatically sealed when docked, which stops oozing.
  • Heads are never picked up or put down. They stay mounted and park on their own.
  • The active head keeps the full build area.

3. FAQ

What is a QDock station? A QDock station is a parking station for Quadro's idle toolheads. It sits at one end of the X-axis, outside the build area, and seals the nozzle of each parked head.

How many QDock stations does Quadro have? Two, one at each end of the X-axis. Each station accommodates up to three toolheads.

Why does Quadro seal parked nozzles? A hot idle nozzle can leak plastic. Sealing it stops oozing and dripping, so the bed and model stay clean and colors don't mix.

Is QDock the same as a tool changer dock? No. In a tool changer, a head is put down and picked up on every change. In Quadro, every toolhead stays mounted on the machine, and QDock only parks and seals the idle ones.

Do parked toolheads reduce the build area? No. The stations are outside the build area, so the active head can reach the full 300 × 300 mm plate.
